Safety and Integrity Management of Operations in Harsh Environments 3rd Workshop and Symposium
Scott Tessier, Chair & Chief Executive Officer

September 20, 2017

Just over a year ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Dr. Faisal Khan, Professor, Canada Research Chair and Director of C-RISE, Memorial University’s Centre for Risk, Integrity and Safety Engineering. Following the success of two previous C-RISE conferences and an international C-NLOPB Safety Conference in 2014, Dr. Khan and I quickly realized that it would be mutually beneficial to formally combine forces this year.

Collaboration between the oil and gas regulator and the largest academic institution in the province makes good sense in bringing together industry experts and researchers to share knowledge and experience. This will help us identify and establish further collaborative research opportunities relevant to the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Area and other harsh environments.

So, on October 18-20, the 3rd Workshop & Symposium on Safety and Integrity Management of Operations in Harsh Environments will take place at the Holiday Inn in St. John’s. This three day conference will feature keynote speakers from around the world and will include:

  • half-day training sessions on state-of-the-art risk and integrity management tools developed to enhance the understanding of operational challenges in harsh environments; and
  • symposium sessions to share latest research advancements in the area of risk and integrity management, and to identify and discuss potential solutions to operational challenges in harsh environments.

As the theme of this year’s conference is ‘Remembering the Ocean Ranger’, we have planned a special panel focused on that tragic event. The panel will feature first-hand accounts and recollections of the disaster and how it forever affected the industry and our province. We will also discuss how far the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Area has come in terms of safety since that terrible night in February 1982.

Further details of the conference, as well as regular and student registrations are available on our homepage or at http://www.mun.ca/engineering/crise/workshops/crise3/.
